Ground Cover – A Talk by Geoff Hawkins
Froyle Gardening Club welcomed one of their own – Geoff Hawkins – for a presentation on ground cover.
Geoff spoke about the value of keeping ground covered in terms of improving and maintaining soil health, suppressing weeds, maximising water retention and avoiding summer baking. In this very wet autumn, advice on combating run off and erosion was especially welcome. Geoff discussed the very wide range of plants and planting styles used to cover the ground. We learned that “shoddy” is not necessarily a bad thing and that moss can be a thing of beauty. Geoff’s photographs illustrated the use of ground cover techniques and plants in situationsranging from grand country gardens to the allotment. Planting is absolutely not limited to the well known “car park” plants but runs from grasses to sedums, to herbs and shrubs offering year round interest.
Many ideas to take away. Thanks Geoff!
