September From the Potting Shed

Hopefully with some mild moist weather we will continue to have plenty of flowers for our pleasure
in the autumn. It is therefore, a good idea to continue to deadhead where necessary to keep the
supply of flowers on going. If you need to collect any seeds from flowers let them dry and then shake
the seed heads into a paper envelope then label the envelope and store to be ready to sow next
spring.
Any ground not being used for crops in the vegetable garden can either have green manure seeds
sown to overwinter or the ground can be covered with a good layer of compost/manure/leaf mould
or what ever you have to hand. This will help keep the ground safe over the winter and allow the
rain to filter down into the soil instead of being washed away.
This year I have tried the ‘Mow Bacter’ lawn treatment and found it very successful. It was amazing
how the moss just disappeared leaving a green lawn. As it is getting to the autumn period now is the
time to apply the autumn treatment. Follow the instructions on the bag and hopefully you too will
have a much better lawn. Any gaps can then be repaired by sowing with new lawn seed.
